All public schools and institutions are expected to remain open as school is in session.
Heads of departments and parastatals are directed to keep records of workers’ attendance for further action”.

Olisa Metuh Rushed Back To Hospital, Vomits In His Car On His Way To Court

Report has it that the PDP spokesman vomitted several times in his car on his way to the Federal High Court, Abuja on Thursday, May 19.
A source said: “Metuh was rushed to hospital last night. It is serious. He is managing high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis.
The doctor asked him to stay at hospital, but he refused because he wanted to appear in court today. He is just stubborn. He does not want his health to get in the way of his trial.
“This morning he vomited in his car on our way to the court. It is sad. I cannot say all that he is going through, but it is bad. His health is deteriorating.”
Recall that in April, he had slumped during the commissioning of the caretaker committee of the PDP Yobe and Borno states chapter.
He was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Hospital.
Metuh is currently standing trial for allegedly destroying Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) evidence against him.

Buhari Is Nigeria’s Best President Ever – APC Chieftain

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress(APC), in Delta State and National Organising Secretary for Grassroot Mobilisers for Buhari, High Chief Igho Osiebe, Wednesday, adjudged President Muhammadu Buhari, the best President in the history of Nigeria.
Saying Nigerians should be grateful to God who through the forces of change and accelerated development thrust up the Daura-born retired General and politician.
Chief Osiebe, who was stated this in Asaba, said President Buhari had displayed enough competence in administering the country especially his prudent management of resources in his drive to deliver quality service to the Nigerian people.
The High Chief of Agbon Kingdom in Ethiopia East area of the oil-rich state, cited the recovery of looted funds starched away in foreign banks by politicians, who corruptly enriched themselves in the past by the President Buhari-led APC administration as a legacy that will live beyond the “no nonsense” retired General.
According to him, as things stand at the moment, there is seeming sanity in the way politicians carry out their businesses in a clear departure from the immediate past government, ‎saying as time goes on, “we as a people shall celebrate a nation free of corruption.”
He took a swipe on the Yakubu Wada-led faction of the Nigerian Labour Congress(NLC) for leading Nigerian workers on strike, noting that such action was self-serving, lack of patriotism to the government and the ‘good people’ of Nigeria.
He wondered if Wada understands the basic economic principles of a free market economy as being introduced in the downstream sector of the petroleum industry as he called on the FG to avoid the “booby trap” of salary increase for workers noting that such was a catalyst for hyper inflation.
Osiebe condemned the renewed hostilities pivoted by the self acclaimed Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, in the Delta region wondering what was there to avenge?
According to him, NDA is an group that does not mean well for the region in its self-serving drive urging the federal government to deal decisively with any mischief maker where and when necessary.
“In President Buhari we have Nigeria’s best President in our national history and it is of note that we as a people must be grateful to those forces of change and accelerated development who gave us this weird character.
“We have seen with enthusiasm how much this generation of politicians dread him and how much he has been able to hound the looters of our national patrimony to surrender and I want to urge him on.
“Ours is an action packed President who will fire anybody who deviates from the path of bringing glory to our nation like we saw in the sack of the immigration boss over alleged extortion of officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service, such action is alien to us in our clime.
“I understand a group of masochists who goes by the name, Niger Delta Avengers, vowed to hold Nigeria ransom, I wonder what they are avenging, in whose interest and for what? We are peace loving people in the region therefore the president should go all out for any trouble maker when and wherever necessary,” he said.

Nigeria Is Ready For Nuclear Energy – Fashola

The Federal Government says Nigeria is ready to commence the production of nuclear energy.
The Minster of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, made this known at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja.
Fashola said Nigeria had secured the necessary certification from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He said:
This thing has protocols and standards; we are already in it; we are not venturing into it; we started a nuclear programme 17 years ago.
We have gone through the training level; we have produced 25 graduates of masters level under certification by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
We have found the sites; the sites have been approved, two sites have been approved by International Atomic Energy Agency.
We have started the design for the financing; that is the stage we are now; once we conclude that, we move to the design for the construction.
If all things go well, by quarter four of next year – that is the schedule that I met – we should have started construction.
The minister said it was important for Nigeria to focus on the gains and safety of nuclear energy as obtained in other developed countries.
He said that since the whole world was moving toward a cleaner fuel and the use of more sustainable form of energy, Nigeria could not be an exception.
He, however, said that the developed countries could only share the technology with countries ready keep to the standards in the utilisation of the technology.
Fashola further said that diversifying the nation’s energy mix would lead to the utilisation of the various forms of renewable energy sources in the country.
This, according to him, will ultimately make electricity cheap in the country.
“What we are thinking about is long-term solution. We need a solution that will endure for generations to come. When you design a power solution, design it so that the next coming generations can use it,” he said.
He said the ministry and other agencies under his supervision were working hard to ensure that Nigeria obtained the best in the electricity industry through strict regulatory responsibilities.
On the monthly meeting with stakeholders in the industry, Fashola said it was designed to evolve better ways of managing the industry, adding that it was yielding the desired results.

Election Bribe: Wike Ordered Me To Collect N700m From Bank – PDP Scribe Confesses

The detained Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Samuel Johnson Okpoko has told the EFCC that he collected N700m cash from Fidelity Bank on the instruction of Governor Nyesom Wike.
While Okpoko will soon be charged to court, the anti-graft agency might put the invitation of the governor on hold because of constitutional immunity.
The immunity however does not prevent the EFCC from investigating the allegation against the governor and keeping vital information for his trial after his tenure.
According to a source in EFCC, Okpoko admitted that he collected the cash in two tranches at Trans Amadi branch of Fidelity Bank Plc in Port Harcourt.
The source said: “Operatives of the EFCC, have grilled the Rivers State Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mr. Samuel Johnson Okpoko , for collecting N700million from the controversial $115milloon lodged with Fidelity Bank Plc, by the immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison- Madueke
“Okpoko, who was the Rivers state’s PDP campaign coordinator in the 2015 Presidential Election collected the sum of N700 million in two tranches of N600 million and N100 million respectively at the Trans Amadi branch of Fidelity Bank Plc, Port- Harcourt.
Investigations by the EFCC revealed that Okpoko cashed N600 million on March 27 and N100 million on March 31,2015.
“Explaining how he became involved, Okpoko said he was instructed by the then PDP governorship candidate, Nyesom Wike to go to the branch of Fidelity Bank to cash some money there.
The source quoted Okpoko as saying: “I was with my governor in his house sometime 27th day of March 2015, when he got a call and Chief Barrister Nyesom Wike after the phone call told me that the call was from Fidelity Bank and they have some money for him”.
But Special Assistant to Governor Wike on electronic media Mr Simeon Nwakaudu said: “We are not aware of what you talked about in your test message.”

U.S. Senate passes act that would let families of Sept. 11 victims sue Saudi Arabian government

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate passed legislation Tuesday that would allow families of Sept. 11 victims to sue the government of Saudi Arabia, rejecting the fierce objections of an American ally and setting Congress on a collision course with the Obama administration.
The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, approved by voice vote, had triggered a threat from Riyadh to pull billions of dollars from the U.S. economy if the bill was enacted.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., gives victims’ families the right to sue in U.S. court for any role that elements of the Saudi government may have played in the 2001 attacks that killed thousands in New York, the Washington, D.C., area and Pennsylvania.
The House still must act on the legislation.
Relatives of Sept. 11 victims have urged the Obama administration to declassify and release U.S. intelligence that allegedly discusses possible Saudi involvement in the attacks.
Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir denied this month that the kingdom made threats over the bill. He said Riyadh had warned investor confidence in the U.S. would shrink if the bill became law.
“In fact what (Congress is doing) is stripping the principle of sovereign immunities, which would turn the world for international law into the law of the jungle,” Al-Jubeir said May 3.
The U.S. Treasury Department said Saudi Arabia in March held US$116.8 billion in Treasury debt.
Passage of the bill sends the message that the United States “will combat terrorism with every tool we have available, and that the victims of terrorist attacks in our country should have every means at their disposal to seek justice,” Cornyn said.
Schumer said any foreign government that aids terrorists who strike the U.S. “will pay a price if it is proven they have done so.”
Given the concerns that we’ve expressed, it’s difficult to imagine the president signing this legislation
Senate Democrats had supported the legislation, putting them at odds with the Obama administration. The White House has said the bill could expose Americans overseas to legal risks, and spokesman Josh Earnest said Tuesday efforts to revise the legislation fell short in addressing the administration’s concerns about preserving sovereign immunity.
“Given the concerns that we’ve expressed, it’s difficult to imagine the president signing this legislation,” Earnest said at the White House.
Schumer was confident the Senate had the necessary two-thirds vote of the chamber to override a presidential veto.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the chairman of the Senate subcommittee that controls foreign aid, had blocked the bill from moving to the Senate floor until changes were made to ensure the legislation didn’t backfire on the United States.
Graham’s apprehension was rooted in the possibility a foreign country could sue the United States if the door was opened for U.S. citizens to take the Saudis to court.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, also had warned that the legislation, if passed, would alienate Saudi Arabia and undermine a longstanding yet strained relationship with a critical U.S. ally in the Middle East.

Messi ‘disappointed’ to miss out on 2016 Olympics

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has admitted he is disappointed to be left out of the Olympic Games squad. The Barcelona forward will instead play in the Copa America Centenario, as coach Gerardo Martino decided not to feature him in both competitions.
But Messi says he would have loved to play at the Olympics in Brazil.
“I would have liked to go because it was a spectacular experience for me to play in the [2008] Olympics, just as it was for the [2005] Under-20 World Cup,” Messi told ESPN.
“Not just because we won, but for the experience I gained.
“It was a great experience to stay in the Olympic Village and meet other elite athletes from other sports and to be just another athlete among them.
“That was very spectacular even though we didn’t spend a lot of time in the village.

Marriage not about big weddings, what happens afterwards is the essence – Empress Njamah

Nollywood actress, Empress Njamah, has said she is not under any pressure to get married, as she does not see it as an easy venture. The bulgy-eyed thespian told the Punch in a recent chat that marriage will come at its own time.
According to her, “I am a realist. I am not the kind of woman who thinks that things just come to you. It will come at some point. It is not easy for people like us in the limelight unlike others. What kills us sometimes, is wanting to be perfect. A lot of people who fancy you probably don’t fancy being in the news.”
She expressed her opinion about the trend of “Baby Mamas” in the industry, stating that ‘there is a lot of deception about it.’
“Most of them who pretend that they are happy about being ‘Baby Mamas’ go home and feel sorry for themselves wishing that have a proper man.
“I have friends who feel that they have got to a certain age and they are not taken. These days, there are 30 women to a man. There is no pressure on me for not being married because I come from an enlightened family. Most of the things happening in the industry are not encouraging.
“This week, you are happy and have a big wedding, the next, you have broken up. What is the essence?,” she quipped.

Story of My Life: I slept with my driver just to have children for my husband

I am not a loose woman. I am just a woman who loves her husband very much and didn’t want to lose him. I just did what I had to do to save my marriage even though I feel guilty sometimes. It was not easy but I slept with my driver so that I could give my husband a child, but instead, God gave me twins, a boy and a girl.
I was married to Philip for eight years. We had no child. “The worst was that I never got pregnant even for a day.” His mother became so impatient that she started breathing down my neck as she gave me no breathing space at all. She moved in to live with us and practically made my life unbearable – in my matrimonial home. I cannot drink water and drop the cup because she must insult me. It got to a point that she stopped eating my food because, according to her, I should be feeding my children so that they would grow healthy and stronger and not her. “Monica, if you had children, you are supposed to be feeding them with all these food so that they would grow healthy and strong. I am getting old so I don’t need all these nonsense you call food. Take them away and give me grandchildren,” she would scream. She also stopped talking to me, however, the only time she talks to me is when she wants to insult me and remind me of how less a woman I was.
Philip and I love each other so much that he stood by me despite all his mother did or said to frustrate me to leave him. We visited different specialists and they all certified us medically alright. I have visited churches, held vigils and even fasted for days, drank various concoctions of varied colours and combinations all in the name of getting pregnant so that my mother-in-law can stop humiliating me yet I couldn’t get pregnant.
At a point, I stopped coming out of my bedroom because it was obvious my mother-in-law had vowed to frustrate me out of her son’s home. Most times, I just stayed in my bedroom and either cries, pray, think and then sleep off because I was scared of his mother confronting me. To make things worse, she sent away the house help because she said, “You don’t need any house help because there are no children to take care of. Take care of your house yourself and stop wasting my son’s hard earned money.”
It was just the three of us living at home, “God, I was always so terrified even when I hear her voice from a distance.” It is so agonizing to say this but my husband usually pleads with me to come out of the room and this makes him feel so sad especially those times I refuse because I don’t want to come face-to-face with his mother. When her troubles became too unbearable, Philip practically threw her out of the house just to make me feel safe and comfortable in my own home.
Even after she had left, I could still hear those insults in my head so I decided to take a bold step – I seduced and slept with our driver, Okon. Okon is a young man in his late 20’s. He is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering but because he could not get a good paying job, he opted to become a driver. I promised to get him a good job if he sleeps with me just once but I never disclosed the reason for this. However, Okon thought I just wanted to cheat on my husband with him. I planned it during my ovulation so that I could get pregnant, although it was not easy sleeping with another man. I knew I was betraying my husband but I saw it as a necessary action. After a month, I discovered that I was pregnant. So, as promised I got a job for Okon in a friend’s company where he started earning almost N150, 000 per month. When I told Philip that I was pregnant, he was so excited. “Sweetheart, God has finally answered our prayers. I am pregnant,” I revealed.
When I was five months pregnant, he informed his mother and she immediately returned to the house. She pampered me like a baby and also took good care of me. I never wanted to do any scan but my mother-in-law insisted. When I finally did the scan, it showed I was pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl. My mother- in-law and husband were extremely happy while I felt much fulfilled. “God thank you for compensating me with a set of twins after eight years of barrenness,” I muttered.
When the twins were born, the girl took ill for some time. It took a while before she fully recovered after several treatments and this got me worried. Philip and I insisted that blood test be carried out on them to determine their blood group and genotype and then came the shocking revelation. The doctor informed us that although their blood groups are both A, however, their genotypes are AS for the girl and AA for the boy meanwhile Philip and I are both AA. I wanted the ground to open and swallow me up because I felt Philip would ask questions but to my surprise, he did not. He just said, “Sweetheart, lets go home. We have had quite a long day, you and my babies need to rest.”
Three months later, he held me closely and said, “Monica, don’t be scared. I don’t want to know who the father of the twins is. I know whatever you did, you did to save our marriage and I am very proud of you. I promise to always love you and my babies. I promise this will be a secret between us. I love you sweetheart. I know we will have our own children someday.” I wept as he wiped my tears with his hands.
I know what I did was wrong but at least my mother-in-law is extremely happy with me, that is all that matters. Although, everyone is happy but I feel guilty that I selfishly used an innocent man to achieve my aim. But before anybody judge me; just put yourself in my shoes and think for a moment what you will do?

Husband catches pregnant wife having sex with another man

A woman simply identified as Mercy was on Monday morning caught sleeping with another man in Otukpo, Benue State.
Her husband identified as Okpani caught the wife and her lover red-handed after he set them up, having suspected the wife was constantly cheating on him.
DailyPost gathered that Okpani, a Local Government staff told his pregnant wife that he will be going for a NULGE meeting which is supposed to take place in Makurdi, the state capital this morning. However, Okpani went to the neighbour’s house to stay and spy on his wife’s movement.
After a while, a middle aged man who was identified as Omale walked stealthily into his matrimonial room. Okpani gave them a little time before coming out of his hideout into the room, and alas, his wife was having sexual intercourse with Omale.

Men should stop sucking their wife’s breast, it’s for babies – Wale Oke

breast-suckingProf Wale Oke, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH has called on men to stop competing with their babies to suck the wives’ breast.
Oke urged his fellow men to allow their babies to enjoy their natural meal.
He spoke yesterday at the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW). The programme was organised by LASUTH Community Health Department in conjunction with the hospital’s Pediatrics.
According to him, the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding were many.
He said: “When a mother breastfeeds her baby, it creates bond between them. It is also a natural family mechanism. Breast-feeding mothers do not have bone diseases, breast and ovarian cancers”.
Oke said the state had created an enabling environment for mothers with its policies to work and still feed their babies.
“Working and breastfeeding can go together if mothers try because it is necessary to have healthy babies,” he said.
On her part, First Lady of Lagos State, Wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode urged mothers to breastfeed their babies exclusively for six months so that they can be healthy.
This, according to her, would prevent babies from coming down with childhood diseases, such as cough, diarrhea and catarrh, among others.
Mrs Ambde, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the state’s Civil Service Pension Office, Mrs Ademola Olabowale, said medical science had made it known that breast supplied basic nutrients to newborns, adding that the breast milk remained the most important protein for babies’ growth.
“The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for six months, and mixed breastfeeding up to two years,” she said.
Breast milk, she said, usually helps to build the immunity for the newborns, saying it would protect them from childhood killer diseases.

My wife always tears my boxers to rape me – Man tells court

“My wife has turned my boxers to rags as she always tears them to rape me,” a retired soldier, Gafaru Rodoye, told an Igando Customary court in Lagos. He told the court on Tuesday that his wife, Idiat, with whom he had five children in their 20-year old marriage, always raped him.
“My wife always rape me; she had turned all my boxers to rags to achieve her selfish aim,” he said.
The petitioner said that his wife was in the habit of threatening his life through beating and that he was afraid she might kill him one day.
“I had to run away from my 16-flat building to rent an apartment elsewhere just to avoid her frequent beatings, but she trailed me to my new apartment to fight me.
“I have reported her severally to different police stations, but it did not yield any positive result,” he said.
Gafaru said that his wife poured hot water on the new wife that was brought for him from the village by his family.

CAF fines Nigeria $5,000 for overcrowding at Kaduna Stadium during AFCON qualifier

Confederation of African Football, CAF, on Monday fined Nigeria with $5,000 (4,400 euros) over what it described as overcrowding and lack of security during their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt.
The continent’s football governing body imposed the fine at a disciplinary meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, threatening that “sanctions will be applied” if there was any repeat.
It will be recalled that more than 40,000 spectators crowded the 15,000-capacity Ahmadu Bello Stadium in the northern city of Kaduna on March 29 to watch the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Fans were seen climbing onto any available space, such as floodlight scaffolding, while others had to be held back from spilling onto the pitch by police mounted on horseback.
The Kaduna State government had thrown open the doors of the venue to allow fans to watch the crucial qualifier for free.
Egypt defeated Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the return leg in Alexandria 1-0, thereby ending any hopes of Nigeria qualifying for the tournament in Gabon next year.

[LIST] 10 Ways the Niger-Delta Attack is Affecting Nigeria

Chevron’s Okan offshore production platform around Escravos in Warri, Delta State was last week blown up, barely 48 hours after the first attack, a pipeline transporting crude oil to the Warri and Kaduna were also blown up.

A group known as Niger Delta Avengers has claimed responsibility for the explosions which has affected the nation’s socio-economic existence. Below are the 8 ways Nigeria is suffering from the attacks:

1. Nigeria’s output of crude oil has declined and is now close to a 22-year low, Reuters data shows, putting intense pressure on the country’s finances.

2. Shell’s Forcados field is still closed and under force majeure following a February subsea pipeline attack, taking out 250,000 barrels per day.

3. The violence has depressed production in the country to roughly 1.69 million bpd in May, the lowest since at least June 2007.

4. The violence could scare investment away from the country according to analysts. If situation remain as it is, companies will not consider Nigeria for upstream investments.

5. The Trans Forcados pipeline in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State had reduced the production of the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company from 250,000 barrels per day to almost 115,000 bpd.

6. Also, NPDC, the crude oil production arm of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, had been forced to stop operation in the area because of the damage to the 48-inch pipeline being operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company.

7. The NNPC’s latest financial report stated that vandalism of the Forcados Export Pipeline resulted in crude oil loss worth about N20bn between the months of February and March

8. It was also gathered that the loss may have eroded the gains Nigeria would have derived from the recent rise in oil price.

9. The attacks on the oil and gas facilities have worsened the blackout being experienced in many parts of the county as four power plants became idle on Sunday, bringing the total number of plants not generating any megawatts of electricity to 12.

10. Shell workers at the Bonga oil field in the Niger Delta on Monday were evacuated following a militant threat. This significantly reduce man power in the sector

Trump changes tune on taxing the wealthy

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he's open to raising taxes on the rich, backing off his prior proposal to reduce taxes on all Americans and breaking with one of his party's core policies dating back to the 1990s.
"I am willing to pay more, and you know what, the wealthy are willing to pay more," Trump told ABC's This Week.
The billionaire real estate tycoon has said he would like to see an increase in the minimum wage, although he told NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday he would prefer to see states take the lead on that front instead of the federal government.
"I don't know how people make it on $US7.25 an hour," Trump said of the current federal minimum wage. "I would like to see an increase of some magnitude. But I'd rather leave it to the states. Let the states decide."
Trump's call for higher taxes on the wealthy is a break with Republican presidential nominees who have staunchly opposed tax hikes for almost three decades.
Democrats, including presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton, have pressed for increased taxes on the wealthiest Americans for years.
Trump released a tax proposal last September that included broad tax breaks for businesses and households. He proposed reducing the highest income tax rate to 25 per cent from the current 39.6 per cent rate.
Pressed on the contradiction between his latest comments on taxes and the September tax plan, Trump said he viewed his original proposal as "a concept" and that he expected it would be changed following negotiations with congress.
"By the time it gets negotiated, it's going to be a different plan," Trump told ABC. He emphasised in separate interviews with ABC and NBC that his priorities were lowering taxes on the middle class and businesses.
"The middle class has to be protected," Trump told NBC. The rich are "probably going to end up paying more", he said.
The Clinton campaign said Trump was trying to pander to voters beyond those who supported him in the Republican nominating contests and that he had no intention of raising the taxes of wealthy people.
"Don't believe Donald Trump's weak attempts at a general election 'makeover' for even a second," Christina Reynolds, a Clinton campaign spokeswoman, said in a statement.
"Trump's economic plans take direct aim at working Americans - his proposal to cut trillions in taxes for the top one per cent would almost certainly come at the expense of working- and middle-class families."
Republicans remain deeply divided over Trump's candidacy, although he has pledged to try to unite the party ahead of its convention in July.
Prominent party leaders such as Paul Ryan, the top elected US Republican, have distanced themselves from Trump.
Ryan, who will preside over the July 18-21 convention in Cleveland where the party will formally nominate its presidential candidate, said last week he hoped to eventually support Trump. But he added: "I'm just not there right now."
Underscoring the party's divisions, Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate and a Trump supporter, criticised Ryan for failing to endorse Trump.
The conservative populist firebrand said she would work to defeat Ryan in his August 9 primary race against a conservative businessman.
Clinton said she hoped to take advantage of Republican reticence over Trump to draw the support of party defectors.
"I am asking people to come join this campaign," the former secretary of state told CBS. "And I've had a lot of outreach from Republicans in the last days who say that they are interested in talking about that."

Buhari set to sign 2016 budget today

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to sign this year’s budget today after receiving the clean copy of the document yesterday, it was learnt.
The 2016 Appropriation Bill was presented to the President last month after passage by the National Assembly, but the President declined to assent it after discovering that many key projects had been removed as some constituency projects were added by the lawmakers.
The N6.08 trillion proposal was presented by the President to the joint sitting of the National Assembly on December 22, last year.
A source, who spoke on  condition of anonymity yesterday, said all was ready for the President to assent the bill today.
He said: “All things being equal, the President will today assent the 2016 Appropriation Bill.”
“The two committees have finished their work and a clean copy is now with the Presidency.” Earlier yesterday, the chairman of the committee set up to reconcile the grey areas in the document, Deputy House Speaker Yussuff Lasun, presented the clean copy  to President Buhari’s National Assembly Advisers –  Ita Enang (Senate)  and Sumaila Kawu (House of Representatives).
The presentation was conducted behind closed doors.
The Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Media, Jonathan  Gaza, told reporters yesterday: “Don’t forget that we are also  Nigerians and it is our desire for the country to move forward.  I am quite optimistic and I enjoin all other Nigerians, including yourselves, to be as optimistic as me that in the very near future, this budget will be signed into law.
“Well, I honestly believe that we have to be quite careful with our choice of words; over time, there have been differences and both arms of government sat down to look at what those issues were.
“Most importantly, what we want is to see our country and our economy moving forward. To this end, just as I earlier stated and I want to reiterate, both sides of the divide are working hard and the budget before long is going to be signed into law.”
The House adjourned plenary till May 12 to enable members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) attend their congresses.

Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur dies

Afeni Shakur, the mother of rap legend, Tupac Shakur has died aged 69.
A former member of the Black Panther died from a possible cardiac arrest at her home in California, according to reports.
Rolling Stone reported that the Marin County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Shakur’s death on Twitter.
The report said deputies had responded to a report of a possible cardiac arrest at Shakur’s home at 9:34pm on Monday. Efforts to revive her failed and she was pronounced dead about an hour later at the hospital.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of her death.
Following the shooting death of her son, Tupac in 1996, Shakur had taken control of his estate winning legal battles against his record label for ownership of his huge body of unreleased materials.
Afeni Shakur was born in 1947 with the birth name Alice Williams. She later became a major member of the Black Panther party and spent time in prison while pregnant with Tupac as a result of her activities as a Panther.
The late rapper’s Grammy nominated song Dear Mama was a tribute to her and the sacrifices she made in raising him.

Fulani herdsmen kill in self-defence – Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, has defended herdsmen over the alleged attack on farmers across the country, saying they did so in self-defence. Leader of the group, Senator Dagiri Alkali said herdsmen moved into new territories across the country because members of the Boko Haram sect attacked them in the North-East and other parts of the country and stole millions of cows from them.
Stressing that Fulani herdsmen were also victims of activities of cattle rustlers in Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue and parts of Kogi states where millions of cows were taken away from them, Alkali asked to know where Nigerians expect cattle breeders to keep the over 20 million cows in the country.
According to Alkali, “When the reserves and forest were gazetted and reserved for cattle breeders, this incident was not there; but the increase in population has now wiped out the entire grazing reserves in this country; 400 and something of them all wiped out. And you have a population of about 20 million cows. Where do you keep them? And every one of us likes to eat meat.
“This is a venture that over 20 million people are engaged in. And nobody cares to know what the causes of this problem are. Presently, you know the case of Boko Haram. They attacked and decapitated the population of Fulani in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe and some parts of Taraba.
“The cattle rustlers have displaced the Fulani in Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau and Benue and in some parts of Kogi. Millions of cattle have been taken from these herdsmen. So when somebody says a Fulani man killed somebody, I wonder why? How? It’s only a poor man that fights.
“But you, as the military people, you know self-defence is an art. In the military, if you are attacked, you have to defend yourself. You have been squeezed; you have to find a way to survive.”
Alkali also wondered why Nigerians have refused to find out the reason Fulani herdsmen decided to move to other territories in the country.

Our first May the Fourth without Han Solo: A sad day indeed

After waiting more than 30 years to see Solo and Chewie back in action, the big day finally arrived.
I got chills when I saw the "piece of garbage" (better known as the Millennium Falcon) blasting its way off Jakku, and I almost jumped out of my seat when I heard Solo say, "Chewie, we're home."
Everything in "The Force Awakens" was going great until we got to that dreadful bridge. I remember knowing what was going to happen at some point in that sequence and wanting to scream, "Chewbacca, shoot him! Rey, Finn...do something!" But the inevitable death by lightsaber happened, and we were helpless, only able to observe in disbelief as the great Han Solo vanished into the depths of the Starkiller Base.
Now, here we are, our first May the Fourth without Captain Solo. To compound the sadness, he didn't even get a proper funeral (at least not yet; I'm looking at you J.J. Abrams). And since a lot of us didn't want to pull a Michael Sam and spoil the movie for the rest of the world when it first came out, we swallowed the bitter pill on our own. Sure, we talked about Han's death with friends, but there's something way more liberating about ranting on the Internet.
Lucasfilm
This May the Fourth, I want more than my regular gift exchange and Star Wars binge-watching. I want a day for collective reflection on what made Solo so special and which Han moments stand out most.
Just a couple of my personal favorites: Solo shooting first and the "Never tell me the odds" line (C-3PO can be a little intense). I've got so many, but I really want to know yours. Please share them in the comments section below, and let's say goodbye together to our favorite scruffy-looking nerf herder, the best mercenary in that galaxy far, far away and an unlikely hero who became a great imaginary playmate.
And for those still trying to cope with the loss, I'm sharing my own personal stages of grief below -- in case it helps.
Denial: This has to be a mistake. Solo always talks himself out of everything.
Anger: J.J. Abrams dares to call himself a huge Star Wars fan and then kills Han Solo? And why did Leia hug Rey and not Chewbacca, who really, really needed a hug?
Bargaining: I'm sure there is something we can do to revive him.
Depression: After so much waiting, I only got my heroes back for a brief moment.
Acceptance: I'm writing a piece on Han Solo!
Wishing you all a very galactic May the Fourth

You can now pay someone to call customer service for you

If you hate hold music, you'll love this.
Boston-based startup GetHuman on Wednesday unveiled a new service that lets you to pay $5 to $25 to hire a "problem solver" who will call a company's customer service line on your behalf to resolve issues. Prices vary depending on the company, but GetHuman offers to fight for your airline refund, deal with Facebook account issues, or perhaps even prevent a grueling call with Comcast to disconnect your service.
"These customer service procedures have become these long obstacle courses for us," Christian Allen, GetHuman's CEO, said in an interview. "We avoid them, we procrastinate, and in some cases we don't do them at all."
Allen knows the struggles with customer service all too well, after he put off canceling a hotspot service through a wireless carrier. When he finally got around to making the call, he was bounced around and ended up stuck on the phone. Three months later, he had to go through the whole process again because the service hadn't been canceled the first time around.
"I spent three hours of my life to do this really simple, binary decision," he said.
GetHuman can work as a consumer's assistant, Allen said, but some companies do require more authorization than others.
GetHuman started as a company phone directory that helps people find shortcuts to a live person. But after realizing that getting people the right numbers was only half the battle, Allen said, GetHuman decided to start a pilot of its new "problem solvers" service late last year, saying it has already served nearly 10,000 people. The eight-person shop now has five full-timers whose primary job is working the phones trying to resolve other people's customer service issues.
Allen says his employees are "experts" at this kind of work and he plans on hiring two more callers soon.
There are a few similar services for navigating the maze of customer service, including FastCustomer, which focuses more on saving you from waiting on hold.
Not everybody sounds so thrilled by GetHuman's new service, though. Time Warner Cable, whose new ad campaign jokingly addresses its poor reputation with customer service, said it would still like to hear directly from its customers. But you don't even have to call. They have 24/7 online chat support and the MyTWC app.
"Spending your money on a third party who doesn't know you versus clicking on an app that lets you do self-service seems like an easy choice to us," TWC spokesman Bobby Amirshahi said

|| 00:00:07/00:02:13 ⇱ Can Apple Still Innovate?

The world's most profitable company just became less valuable this week when California-based Apple Inc. reported the first decline in iPhone sales in 13 years. Apple CEO Tim Cook blames the struggling Chinese economy for Apple's weaker earnings, but analysts say other factors may be at play. It's not the end of the world for a company worth more than half a trillion dollars but it's clearly a worrisome trend. Mil Arcega has more.

US: Religious Freedom Curtailed Sharply Across Globe

Religious freedom across the globe has been sharply curtailed over the last year, a U.S. watchdog agency concluded Monday.
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, or USCIRF, said that authoritarian governments throughout the world are jailing prisoners of conscience — most often Christians and Muslims — for practicing their religious beliefs, while there is also an increase in bigotry against Jews and Muslims in Europe.
There is "no shortage of attendant suffering worldwide," the independent government agency said, adding that it is fueled in part by the hundreds of thousands of migrants trying to flee their homelands, often because they have been persecuted for religious reasons.
"The incarceration of prisoners of conscience — people whom governments hold for reasons including those related to religion — remains astonishingly widespread, occurring in country after country, and underscores the impact of the laws and policies that led to their imprisonment," the report said.
It said the instances of religious intolerance "are crises in their own right which cry out for continued action on the part of the international community, including the United States."
The 2016 report said that religious freedom "deserves a seat at the table when nations discuss humanitarian, security and other pressing issues. The United States and other countries must fully accord this right the respect it deserves and redouble their efforts to defend this pivotal liberty worldwide."
Hot spots of religious suffering
The commission singled out some countries for particular abuses against religious minorities. The report cited China, where Christians have been imprisoned for refusing to remove crosses atop churches; Iran, where religious minorities have been sentenced to death for "enmity against God"; and North Korea, where thousands of religious believers have been imprisoned in labor camps.
The commission said more people in Pakistan are on death row or serving life sentences for blasphemy than in any other country in the world, while Saudi Arabia sentenced a Saudi poet and artist to death for alleged apostasy for advocating atheism, although the sentence was later cut to eight years in prison and 800 lashes.
In Uzbekistan, a majority-Muslim country, the report said a human rights activist has been imprisoned for supporting persecuted independent Muslims. Vietnam controls nearly all religious activities.
The report denounced Islamic State jihadists for their "summary executions, rape, sexual enslavement, abduction of children, destruction of houses of worship and forced [religious] conversions."
It said the Syrian and Iraqi governments "can be characterized by their near-incapacity to protect segments of their population" from Islamic State terrorists.
The agency, which acts in an advisory role to President Barack Obama, the U.S. Congress and the State Department, said nine nations should retain their State Department designations as "countries of particular concern" (or CPCs) for their “systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom”: Myanmar, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
The report recommended that eight more countries be added to that list: Central African Republic, Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan and Vietnam.
In addition, 10 countries have been placed on a “Tier 2” watch list. These countries “do not rise to the statutory level that would mandate a CPC designation but require close monitoring due to the nature and extent of violations of religious freedom engaged in or tolerated by governments.”
The list includes Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Cuba, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Russia and Turkey.

Western Investors Eye Chinese Robotic Revolution

Dozens of investors and knowledge collaborators recently visited China from the U.S. and Europe to join in what is being seen as a robotic revolution. Though China has emerged as the biggest market for industrial robots, what is attracting angel investors is the Chinese ability to fabricate and produce at low-cost for the international market.
China biggest supplier of electronic goods
"There is also a lot of innovation going on in China but I think the bigger opportunity is to use China to make your idea become real," Benjamin Joffe, a partner with Hax, an investing company, told VOA at the recent Global Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing. Most of the investors and start-ups coming to China are focusing on markets in the U.S. and Europe, he said.
China has already established a vast network of production and supply chains and associated skills to become the biggest supplier of electronic goods. "For robotics, the advantage is to prototype faster, to be able to produce things at not just lower cost, but also high-tech at any scale--from small scale to very large scale," Joffe said.
Future robotics growth in China
The International Federation of Robotics recently predicted that China will have more industrial robots operating in its factories by 2017 than any other country. Other analysts have said Japan will lose its place as the biggest user of industrial robots next year.
The Chinese robot market, estimated at $9.5 billion, is one of the world's biggest. About one fourth of the 240,000 industrial robots sold worldwide is made in China, according to IFR estimates.

But China also has the biggest potential for further growth because of the low coverage of robots compared to its sprawling industrial zones. There are 30 robots per 10,000 workers in China's manufacturing units compared to a high level of 437 in South Korea, 323 in Japan, 282 in Germany and 152 in the United States, IFR said.
As with most other goods, Chinese robot manufacturers are also trying to take on international giants on the strength of low pricing. For instance,E-Deodar, a subsidiary of Shanghai-based Ningbo Techmation is producing robots for 20-30 percent less compared to three of the world's biggest players, ABB, Germany’s Kuka or Japan’s Kawasaki.
The main reason why Chinese businesses are opting for gigantic and highly efficient robotic arms is to recover some of the lost export markets. Experts cite three important reasons behind the sharp reduction in Chinese electronic and heavy machine exports in recent years. They are the economic slowdown in western markets, complaints about quality of some Chinese products and the rising cost of labor in China.
Cheaper labor, higher quality
Both Chinese industry and government are trying to overcome the problem of high cost and inadequate supply of skilled labor by using giant and highly efficient robotic arms in the supply lines. The high level of precision of these electronic arms also helps raise quality standards and leaves behind very few production defects, if any at all.
"Labor costs have increased hugely. So, we expect the market to become very large in the coming years. There is also a great need for technological solutions to problems concerning production and quality, which our company provides," said Li Lijun, president of Ningbo Cixing Robotics Co.

Li said shoe making factories across Chinese provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian are gradually adopting robotic systems to both replace workers and enhance both quality and production. Li says this is a change because he said many still believe that the use of robots is limited to industries engaged in producing high-end electronics and complex machines.
“In shoe making, [an] assembly line may have about 26 workers. A robotic system can run that line with just two workers. Two workers are still necessary because human beings can perform certain complex and intricate tasks better but requirement of such specialized workers is much less," Li explained.
But lowering costs continues to remain the biggest challenge, even for manufacturers in China with their long tradition of cutting corners. At a basic level, a robotic system that can replace 20 to 30 workers can cost upwards of $100,000. But robot makers say the costs can come down to about one-third as the market expands and they are able to scale up their production.
Beyond factory work

Robots are also of interest to a lot of Chinese beyond just factory production.

One restaurant, which introduced "robot waiters" to replace serving staff, found that the electronic imitators of humans did not serve the purpose. The robots had to be replaced with real workers. Undeterred, a jewelry shop in Guangzhou has introduced eight robot servants to support the sales staff.
The China International Robot show in Shanghai recently displayed a robot bearing resemblance to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe repeatedly making apologetic bows. This was seen as a reference to China's off-repeated demand that Abe sincerely apologize for the atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers on Chinese citizens, including women in Nanjing, during World War II.
